In 1982, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell ignited the boutique hotel trend with the opening of Morgans on Madison Avenue, which boasted the design touches of French designer Andrée Putman. Schrager is once again disrupting the New York hotel scene opening Public ($150+) this week, which features rooms priced significantly below comparable Gotham hotels.

Schrager collaborated with Philippe Starck on the legendary Royalton, then invaded Miami and L.A. with Delano and Mondrian, respectively. This time, Schrager promises to bring lower prices by going back to the Morgans’ core mission — cutting back on unnecessary frills. There is no room service but a lobby deli is available for pick-up orders. Housekeeping has been outsourced.

Once you book a room online you can use your phone to activate the room key. And while there are no fancy Gramercy Park touches, the decor still tells you have arrived in style. All Digital Lifestyle amenities have been addressed: 50-inch flat LCD with Apple TV; touch-controlled shades, custom lightning; Bose Bluetooth speaker; 10 USB ports and power outlets; plus “the fastest internet access in NYC.” 😎
