Jan 7, 2016 | News & Analysis

The Consumer Electronics Show is an excellent beacon of the immediate technology future. Here’s what categories were trending sharply at this annual Las Vegas innovation extravaganza.

While there were many product categories that created waves, including wearables and electric vehicles, as is our practice, we will focus on items that will have a more immediate impact on your future:

  • 4K UHD Blu-ray – There’s no question that the 4K market has been waiting for more content. The good news is that Samsung has released a shipping date and price for its Samsung UBD-K8500 4K Blu-ray player, which will be available this March for just $400, terrific news for consumers. Panasonic also announced its 4K DMP-UB900 Blu-ray player, but offered no shipping date or price. Download the Samsung spec sheet and pre-order yours at Best Buy.
  • Virtual Reality – The news that Facebook’s Oculus Rift would be priced at cost, $600, is excellent news for this emerging trend.
  • Action Cameras – The entrance of the Nikon KeyMission 360 action camera that record 260-degree action is sure to further fuel the burgeoning action camera market.
  • Turntables – With Panasonic’s introduction of two new models of their uber-popular Technics Grand Class 1200G turntable and Sony’s launch of the Sony PS-HX500, we have a nice mini-trend that is sure to warm the cockles of any analog audiophile’s heart.

Like 2010, when CES ushered in the drone revolution, expect big things from these groundbreaking products.
